Hey! A quick note. I just reached out to our Governor and my state representative and senator regarding the matter of Kansas Department of Corrections choosing to send KS inmates to a CoreCivic facility, a privately run prison, in Arizona. I recognize not every person reading this will share my beliefs. Still, I ask you to play out the scenario of private prison growth in your head. Research a little. Think. Research a little more. Think again. Decide for yourself if you happen to be undecided. Regardless if you and I end up sharing the same conclusion on this topic, I hope you reach out to your state officials and share your thoughts on this matter.
Below you'll find a copy of the text I sent via email.
As a Kansan who does their best to stay as informed—as practically possible—with national, state, and local political happenings, I am concerned and appalled that Kansas is shipping inmates to Arizona, specifically to a CoreCivic owned and managed facility. I recognize overcrowding is an issue. However, a review of drug laws might be in order, or an improvement to sentencing guidelines, or healthcare and social safety net investment to help stem the causal forces of crimes committed might better serve Kansas, our nation and humanity generally. This decision—to send Kansas inmates to AZ—is bad governance in my opinion.
