Can we please dispense with authors saying something along the lines of "Don't disrespect or talk shit on other authors"?
It can come across as insincere.
I mean I just witnessed many of you within the last seven to ten days totally take a shit on the content in an article containing writing advice suggested by Franzen originally published almost a decade ago. Practically everything I read in response to that republished writing advice was mocking in tone and shit-flinging in spirit and deed. And that was haughty rage and self-righteous silliness directed at rehashed content. (Why it was rehashed I have no clue. Clicks?) Furthermore, it seems many suggesting or sharing the "Don't shit on..." advice don't seem to want certain politicians to not call out or talk shit on their colleagues (Ex: many of y'all (like me) seem fine with AOC stirring the pot, etc.). Nor do I seem to uncover people not wanting businesspersons to avoid calling out their colleagues when appropriate. (But who exactly can and gets to decide exact & precise appropriateness?) And some of the same people disseminating "Don't shit on..." demands show little to no restraint or self-control when labeling other people assholes — hell, it seems to be trademark for some.
Can you just say what you really mean: Don't shit on me, don't shit on my friends? And then recognize every person holds this same viewpoint and likely abandons the precept and disregards its application when they are dealing with outsiders themselves? And admit that you're essentially engaging in attempts to threaten others with different voices or opinions or values or social networks, and that there is too, perhaps, a kind of tribalism at play, an attempt to use existing position and privilege and brand to stifle disagreement with, or challenge to, some form or subset of the existing establishment—and the clique(s) within same—by new/young/emerging voices (or even by some old/mature/experienced ones)?
Yes? Maybe? Perhaps?
I sure hope so.
ADDENDUM: And seeing authors, some of whom regularly decry late stage capitalism, encourage readers to use Goodreads (an Amazon company / division) is an altogether special kind of weird. I mean, exactly why do they encourage people to surrender and further enslave themselves and their day-to-day living to platforms run by mega-corporations? And these are our artists? Our inspirers? Revealers of truth? Of alternate routes? Supposed shapers of hope and lighters of new pathways and approaches? Really? Come on now. FFS JFC (SMDH)
Seasonal PSA: To the best of my knowledge there is not a German word for "Leftover Thanksgiving turkey can take massive amounts of cracked pepper so make yourself that fucking sammich with gobs of mayonnaise" but there should be.
